About
Medicon Valley
Medicon Valley unites concentrated knowledge and expertise of two countries to create a thriving life science environment.
The cluster spans across the Greater Copenhagen Region, consisting of eastern Denmark and southern Sweden. It unites the strengths of Copenhagen, Lund and Malmö into a cross-border Life Science ecosystem.
With nearly 600 Life Science companies, 9 research universities, and 32 hospitals, the region grants a high density of talent, open knowledge exchange and continuous innovation.
The region's universities offer a broad range of globally recognised Life Science research programmes, producing a constant stream of highly specialised graduates. This, coupled with one of Europe’s highest public investments in education, fuels an ever-growing and internationally competitive talent pool.
Medicon Valley also profits from the region's deeply embedded culture of openness and the close collaboration between privately-owned companies and between the public and private sector. Here, research institutions, startups, and global corporates work side-by-side, accelerating the journey from discovery to impact.

CLINICAL TRIALS DESIGNED FOR IMPACT
Greater Copenhagen Region's Life Science cluster offers an advanced healthcare system with access to unbiased health data, diverse biobanks, a transparent regulatory landscape, and swift patient recruitment to ensure efficient trial set-up and faster time to results. It makes Medicon Valley one of Europe’s most efficient environments for clinical trials.
At the core stands Trial Nation, a public-private partnership that supported 455 commercial trials across areas like oncology, dementia, and infectious diseases in 2024 alone.

SMART MANUFACTURING BACKED BY GLOBAL PLAYERS
Manufacturing in the region is equally robust. Medicon Valley is home to numerous pharma companies, fabricating their products locally. In Europe, we rank second in density of research facilities and score the highest number of Contact Development Manufacturing Organisations (CDMO) sites.
Notably, FujiFilm Diosynth Biotechnologies has invested several billion dollars into expanding its biologics production capabilities and AGC Biologics has committed $239 million to major upgrades in the region. Both investments are profound examples for the global importance of Medicon Valley.

The European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund is set to become the world’s most powerful neutron source, enabling transformative research in Life Sciences, materials and energy. Its associated Data Management & Software Centre (DMSC) in Copenhagen provides critical digital infrastructure to support international research collaborations. The ESS and DMSC is a prime example of cross-border collaboration in the Greater Copenhagen Region.
Medicon Valley is home to a trio of transformative research facilities.
Together, they anchor and advance research in the region's Life Science cluster and bridge disciplines and industries.
